They Characteristics Body - Their body colour is darker orange than other tigers, and their stripes are black like other tigers but thinner. Every tigers stripes are different. Stripes help them camouflage in shadows in the rainforest (jungle) which is their habitat (where they live in the wild). It has powerful, muscular legs. Size - A female is about 110 kg and a male is about 140 kgs. They are about 79 cm tall and 2.2 meters long. Beards -Males have a lot of fur around their face like a beard (more than other tigers). Whiskers - Their whiskers can sense their prey moving through the jungle. Tail - If the tiger is feeling aggressive it will move its tail quickly from side to side. Finding Food - They are slow and patient hunters. A tiger moves quietly and runs very fast to catch its prey. The tiger uses its power jaws to trap and kill. They prey for 20-30 minutes before making a move.
Needs Food - They are carnivores (meat eaters) eating big or small animals like birds, fish, wild boar, deer and monkeys. Water - For swimming, catching food, and keeping cool. Shelter - Trees for shade from the sun and hiding from their prey.
Life cycle Mothers - Females grow up to 110 kg and have 3-4 babies at a time. Babies - grow in their mother’s for 3 ½ months. The babies are called cubs and they drink milk from their mothers. They start eating meat at 18 months old. They stay with their mother for 2-3 years. Fathers - Males grow up to 140 kgs. They can grow to 2.2 meters long. Why are they endangered? Habitat loss - They only live in the rainforests (jungles) of Sumatra. These jungles are being destroyed (deforestation). Hunting & Poaching - People still sometimes kill tigers because they are frightened of them or to get money for their body parts. (David & Noer Helene 2020)
